Hike to the fumaroles of Kalamos
One of the clearest indications of the ongoing volcanic activity on the island of Milos is definitely the fumaroles of Kalamos. Because even without prior geological training you can clearly see that sulphurous vapours are coming out of the ground here. This small area lies on the edge of Tsigrado volcanic crater above Agia Kyriaki.
The little hiker’s guide “Santorini, Sifnos, Western & Southern Cyclades - Walking and swimming on Greek Islands” by Dieter Graf describes a really nice walk to the fumaroles starting in Zefiria. Having made sure you have all the essentials, on this walk you have enough time to experience the varied forms of landscape en route to Kalamos – the fertile plain around Zefiria, an unspoilt heathland landscape when you enter the ring of the crater and wide fields of grain in the crater itself. Anyone who likes travelling on foot and who does not shy away from a bit of effort in the usually blistering heat of the sun will find welcome variety in this hike.
